Shirley began painting as a hobby in 2005 and opened her art business in 2012. After graduating from Business Administration – Computer Information Systems, she spent 15 years in the IT Industry. She became interested in art after researching the history and culture of her ancestors. Her mother's heritage is Kwakwa̱ka̱ʼwakw (Dzawada'enuxw) & Coast Salish (Shuneymuxw); her father's heritage is French Canadian. In 2017, she became a member of the Dzawada'enuxw First Nation. She created her own style using the basic forms of the Mid Coast Art Style. Her primary media include acrylic on canvas and drums.

Francine Cunningham is an award-winning Indigenous writer, artist and educator. She is a graduate of The University of British Columbia Creative Writing Masters of Fine Arts program.
